The launch: On 17 June 2004, UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador Angelina Jolie will launch World Refugee Day celebrations accompanied by a senior government official and a resettled refugee living in the United States. At that time, this esteemed launch delegation will also award the winners of the Fourth Annual World Refugee Day Poster Contest. The event will be held at the National Geographic Society, and will be followed by a press conference.
Since she was named UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador, Ms. Jolie has worked tirelessly towards building advocacy and support for refugees and their assistance and protection. In 2001, she traveled to Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Cote D’Ivoire, Cambodia, and Pakistan in order to visit refugees in the field. Since then, she has traveled to Namibia, Thailand, Ecuador, Kosovo, Chechnya, Jordan and Sri Lanka. Speaking from her personal experience, Ms. Jolie will reach out to the press, the diplomatic community and our nation’s lawmakers to raise awareness about and support for refugees.
The Poster Contest
“To Feel at Home”is the central theme of the fourth Annual World Refugee Day poster contest. Students throughout the United States, grades 4-12, designed posters reflecting the warm sentiments of home and refuge. The three selected winners will travel to open the exhibit with Goodwill Ambassador Jolie, the patron of the contest. Their posters will be on display at the National Geographic Explorer’s Hall throughout the events.
