Yeah, if it wasn't for Jesus I would probably burn incense to the guy. |

Alexander and Leonidas both ..
Maybe it is those of the Dorian race they seek to dismiss?

I went to Greece the part of Macedonia the Greeks now call Greece even though there ancestors called Philip and Alexander Barbarians.
In modern Greece hardly any interest is given to the Great Macedonian. Who did more for its history and traditions than any other so called Greek
There is only a statue in Thessaloniki and no where else. Greeks are more interested in Tourism and Christianity than in there ancient leader.
I went once to find anything to do with Alexander. Pella is a ruin and the people are empty no wonder Alexander never went back. |

It says a lot that a mere 400 years after the death of Alexander, who was revered by the whole Greek, Roman and Hellenistic world, and treated as a god by the Egyptians and Persians, the spread of Christianity totally eclipsed him for 2,000 years Only recently has the world properly taken notice of Alexander again. This may be because Christianity is now on the wane and people are no longer attributing great actions to the power of God, but to the abilities of men - thereby making them superhuman.
It must be said though, that the Greeks have always lived with Alexander and his legacy, for good or ill. Kind of similar to the way the Jews have always known about Jesus, a Jew, but never seemed to have given him the respect the rest of the world thought he deserves. The familiar will never be as exciting as the exotic, and nobody knew this better than Alexander. |
