Don't be shy! Share it with us. By the way everyone, Rodrigo Prieto who was the photographer also did Brokeback Mountain. ... another good movie but it's just not Alexander. I'm teaching Alexander next week ... I'm taking 3 hours instead of the 45 minutes the state allows me. Hope I can keep it down to just that!

I hope you both haven't lost your poems on purpose. Confused Laughing

Of course we did. Laughing Laughing Laughing I should have known there was no hiding place on this forum. If I put mine up it,s on the strict understanding that Joanna has to post her,s!
Right, here goes, for better or worse. It,s about my idea that history isn,t about dry, dusty books stuck on a shelf, but it,s about people who can speak to us directly even though we,re separated by thousands of years.

The Gates of Time.

His fame burns like a shooting star,
No dimming memory,
The gates of time are open and from far,
Alexander speaks to me.

He speaks to me of ancient days.
When all his dreams were real,
And as I hear I stand and am amazed
At what he will reveal.

A golden boyhood,laced with pain,
A mother,s loyalty.
A burning need to leave a glorious name,
A soul-mate,s fidelity.

He tells of hardships and of joy,
And victories hard won,
And like Achilles at the gates of Troy,
The legend has begun.

The Oracle and heaven,s fire
Say he is Ammon,s son.
The gods grant him his wish but then desire
Is quenched in Babylon.

Great poem, Janie! I liked it very much. Joanna, it is clear that there was a "strict understanding", right? Smile

I couldn't find my poem. I looked everywhere , every single piece of paper at my study. It seems that my masterpiece has been lost, forever.
Sad

As I want to keep my promise to Janie ( and all of you ), I've just written another one. I'll post it below.

No need to keep a straight face. I'm not there to see you Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

" Towards The East "

The world was his home;
It was given to him.
Easy, just like that.
He kept a tight hold on it,
A matter close to his heart.
He meant to stay,
If...
Death had stayed away.

BUT

- Tell me, O lovely Muse,
Who is this King ?
Where does he come from ?

- From a Grecian city
In Macedonia,
His legend begins.
He travels to many foreign lands,
Not alone,
With company
His visionary dreams
Which light up his path
Towards the East.

Strong he must be
resolute leadership
gifted, gracious
magnanimous
Alexander,
His name is,
Son of Zeus.

BUT

- He is in his youth,
Too young for deeds !

- Young he is
But trained to feel
The skills of war,
Ares' work.
It's not easy thing
To fight again and again
And never be a loser.
He can endure to face
The blood on his body,
Go close against the enemy
And fight with his hands,
At Granicus.
Here is courage, I mean
Here is bravery,
Glory the prize !

BUT

- Is ithat a man's power?
Or divine ?

- Surely, the drive of a god
Is behind him,
To bring law to people who lack it.
I see him, there, breaking
The Persian horsemen,
At Issos.
At the first line...always !
I see him, there, rush swift, agile
Into a staggered collision of armies
At Gaugamela,
Fighting out his path
Towards the East.
Their eyes gaze on him.
His actions are like an army's
Though he is only one man !
No man ever, is braver
I swear !

BUT

- Where is he going,
Like a gust of the north wind ?
Alexander !
Stay, don't go !

- Alas ! True. He's fading away.
Heart, Oh, my heart, so battered !
Lord on Olympos, father Zeus,
Why you dimmed the light
And made darkness ?
Pallas Athena, goddess of wisdom,
Bring him back,
For his dreams
Still must be fulfilled.
They are promised to us.
Don't take away his time.
Don't take away his life.

Damn, Destiny !
His death, you gave us !

His death is a fact ?

His death is a myth !

No point weeping
my heart,
For now, I understand
Alexander cannot die
He will always live
In my heart
And my mind.

I Opened The Gate........For You ,
ALEXANDER THE GREAT !

You can't imagine the laugh I have everytime I read my poem !

A friend of mine was here before and I told her about it. I pretended I liked it. Then I told her to pay attention and listen to me reciting it. I was reading it and looking at her at the same time. Poor woman ! She was trying hard not to laugh but then, I , myself, couldn't continue and we both burst out laughing Laughing ! Oh, it was so funny ! We couldn't stop laughing ! A real comedy.

" I opened the Gate, for you, Alexander the Great "

Ha, ha ha...Oh, my God, we nearly died laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

Very good, indeed, to use it in ...a comedy. I think I'll translate it in Greek. I have the feeling it is funnier in Greek. Yeah, definitely, it must be funnier. Laughing

Hi Joanna,
why do you think your poem is funny Confused It is very good and I like it...
Who is reciting or should I say, who is speaking the words?
Poetry that is written for a reason and comes from the soul, should not be laughed at, unless it is meant to be humourous.....!
