I don't think he is that ugly and has looks reminiscant of the rather stern looking Herme Azara. I find the photo somewhat wierd, if anything...it makes me wonder 'if there was a photo of Alexander - what would he actually look like...?'
Alex by the time he was 30 would probably have lost some of his earlier good looks and it was said he had wrinkles on his forehead...... Wink The stress of the life he led would have taken its toll The business of the Gedrosia Desert, his chest wound and then Hephaestion's passing would have left him looking absolutely drained and haggard and as Mary Renault said, with grey hairs.....it was not easy for Alexander being Great at times.....!

Unfortunately, not the real head...but that of a statue found near Baalbeck, that probably dates to the Roman period.
Archaeologists also think it could depict Helios, who as we all know, was often modelled on Alexander in the later period.... Wink

Hi and welcome.


It,s difficult to pick one image of Alexander which is true to life partly because he controlled his own image closely and many of his portraits were probably idealised.But I think this may be as true as we can get.It seems to me to have all those characteristics described such as the intense eyes,sensitive mouth, long hair and way of holding his head to one side.I think it,s really beautiful and this is how I picture him towards the end of his life as a mature man.It looks to me to show the incredible strains he must have gone through,but even with the lined forhead and so on,he,s very striking,don,t you think?
I hope this helps a little.

I thought it was the colour the Macedonians wore, maybe more of a lilac...it is the linothorax I am not sure about.... Shocked

The first picture (who is that of?) looked British, the second Austrian. Laughing I think people try too hard with the hair.
