Alexander dead at thirty two
Graced the world but for a moment
Son of Zeus Ammon
Or perhaps of Phillip
Military genuis, phylanx leader, inspires us still
Caesar, Napoleon and Hitler
Seeking kingdoms greater than that conquerred by a god
Forgetting their own mortality
Tried to emulate one whose grace and majesty
Cannot be immitated or acquired
Son of Olympius, snake handler, worshipper of Dionysius
Barbarian woman of Achilles line
Mother to a god
Or perhaps not
Charged high rent for nine months lodging
Did he hate you, love you, or both?
Who were you and of what did you dream?
To see beyond the next mountain
Meeting the next enemy and making them your friends
Loving beauty in all that you saw
Hephaistion, Barsine, Bagoas, Roxanne and Stateira
And yet, at the end, you died alone amongst many
You left us an empty legacy
since you could only find enough breath
to say, "to the strongest" at the end of your journey
Mighty Alexander, accept this offering, this libation
In the spirit intended
May we seek only to know you and give you praise
for you are truly Alexander the Great. |

Come on Janie, we know you're not a poet. You are an excellent painter, though. And painters are artists so they can write poetry, too. Why not ?
HONESTLY I like your poem. If you can't find it , I have kept it. I can post it for you. Tell me.
I have written a poem about Alexander but I can't find it We seem to have mislaid our poems, Janie .If I find it I will think about posting it. You know I care about you. I don't want you to laugh to death |

Of course we did. I should have known there was no hiding place on this forum. If I put mine up it,s on the strict understanding that Joanna has to post her,s!
Right, here goes, for better or worse. It,s about my idea that history isn,t about dry, dusty books stuck on a shelf, but it,s about people who can speak to us directly even though we,re separated by thousands of years.
The Gates of Time.
His fame burns like a shooting star,
No dimming memory,
The gates of time are open and from far,
Alexander speaks to me.
He speaks to me of ancient days.
When all his dreams were real,
And as I hear I stand and am amazed
At what he will reveal.
A golden boyhood,laced with pain,
A mother,s loyalty.
A burning need to leave a glorious name,
A soul-mate,s fidelity.
He tells of hardships and of joy,
And victories hard won,
And like Achilles at the gates of Troy,
The legend has begun.
The Oracle and heaven,s fire
Say he is Ammon,s son.
The gods grant him his wish but then desire
Is quenched in Babylon. |
