BEING THE single mom of a toddler, actress Angelina Jolie said in an interview last week, leaves her so little time for dating that she simply books a hotel room and schedules a male friend for sex.

Her interview in the New York Post last week has left America slack-jawed - and thousands of men wondering how they can get to be friends with Angelina Jolie.

Not to mention the many mothers of toddlers who thought their own option was to meet a girlfriend at the playground.

"I went for about two years with absolutely no man around me and then decided to get closer to men who were already very close friends of mine," Jolie told reporter Megan Lehmann while promoting her new movie, Taking Lives.

"As crazy as it sounds, meeting a man in a hotel room for a few hours and then going back and putting my son to bed and not seeing that man again for a few months is about what I can handle now," said Jolie.

My friends and I did that, too, when our kids were small. But the men were usually our husbands, and the best part was not going back home and putting our kids to bed. We called it a weekend getaway, and we let the sitter fight the bedtime battles.

It just shows we had no imagination.

Instead of Mommy & Me play dates, we could have been scheduling an afternoon at the local Motel 6 with someone we would have liked to get closer to. Trouble is, while Jolie catalogs friends, we'd probably have booked a long nap.

If that's what she does between rounds with a toddler, the girl has energy to burn.

I'm thinking, too, that hoteliers are smacking their foreheads. Free babysitting! What a *** concept! Make it enough like Chucky Cheese, and the kids won't even realize mom has left the room.

Jolie, who won an Academy Award for Girl, Interrupted, does not consider these one-night (or one-afternoon) stands. "These are people that I know very well," she says.

This is clearly very different from the kinds of hotel room assignations confessed to by First Brother Neil Bush, who admitted during divorce proceedings that he had sex with women he did not know while in Thailand and Hong Kong on business. He said they just came to his door.

(When your children ask you the difference between conservatives and liberals, this might be one illustration you can use.)

Said Jolie, "I can feel like a woman and get close to a man but it's not a relationship that interferes with my family."

That means 3-year-old Maddox, the boy she adopted while filming in Cambodia, won't be accidentally walking in on Mom and Mr. Wednesday Between 2 and 4.

Isn't it just like Hollywood to make Rolodex sex part of the cultural conversation?

What is this supposed to be? Another definition of family? On the bookstore shelf next to Heather Has Two Mommies, you will soon find My Mommy and Whoever Picks Up His Nextel First?

Give this young mom credit. She's opened up vast new scheduling possibilities for the busy mother - not to mention the dad, who can't seem to get mom's attention over the decibel level of family life.

As the teen-agers say, "Get a room!"

Just make sure it is with each other.

The Many 'Lives' of Angelina Jolie

March 15, 2004
Sultry ANGELINA JOLIE is trying to prevent a killer from 'Taking Lives' in her new thriller. Tonight on ET, the OscarĀ® winner chats with ET about her co-star ETHAN HAWKE -- and her new onscreen leading man, BRAD PITT!

"They are so sweet," says Angelina about her hunky pair of onscreen love interests. Angelina plays "husband and wife" with Brad in 'Mr. And Mrs. Smith,' a hit man comedy currently filming. In 'Taking Lives,' in theaters Friday, March 19, she plays an FBI profiler who gets entangled with Ethan's character.

"[Her] senses are exposed all the time, so [she needs] to get inside things and touch things," says Angelina, "so it almost seems she has this strange love affair with [stuff] like that, and even when she's with dead bodies she has the oneness that she doesn't have with people as much."

Playing a loner who works more efficiently solo, Angelina becomes unexpectedly involved in a complicated romantic entanglement while tracking a chameleon-like serial killer who assumes the lives and identities of his victims. In discussing the idea of taking on personas, Angelina reveals some insight into her marriage with ex-hubby BILLY BOB THORNTON and why she was so attracted to him:

"I think the reason I got married, or spent time in different relationships in my life -- I discovered later -- was less about falling in love with somebody and more about there was something I needed to learn from them, and I would evolve closer in their direction as a person. And then once I'd done that, we'd kind of stop growing together. But I think we tend to do that as people; we collect people around us who we want to somewhat morph into, or learn from."

One individual who stands to learn a lot from Angelina -- and vice versa -- is her adopted son MADDOX, whom the actress just can't seem to get enough of.

"He comes to the set every day, and he's got his classes and things at home," she explains. "But yeah, I'd miss him too much, so I drag him out."

Also starring KIEFER SUTHERLAND, OLIVIER MARTINEZ and GENA ROWLANDS, 'Taking Lives' hits theaters nationwide March 19. Watch ET tonight for more with Angelina!
